Athletic Club 2 Real Mallorca 1 Match Report

After the first win of the season last week against Alaves, Mallorca went to the San Mames stadium with hope of getting at least a draw. Coach Arrasate continued with his more attacking formation of 4-2-3-1 and the opponents Athletic Club were without their star player Nico Williams. It was his Brother that led the line and it was the said Iñaki that won and converted a first half VAR awarded penalty in the 9th minute. Leo Roman in the Mallorca goal was unlucky not to save it as he dived over the spot-kick.

Mallorca started to come more and more into the game in the second half and in the 77th minute Samu Costa sent over what looked like a cross straight over the head of Spanish international keeper Unai Simon and into the far corner. A draw now was looking on the cards but in the 82nd minute Alejandro Rego drifted past the motionless Muriqi to convert the winner. Substitute Antonio Sanchez was sent off in the 92nd minute for sarcastically applauding the referee for giving him a red card.

The result leaves Mallorca rooted to the bottom of the league and gives coach Arrasate much to think about over the International break.
